Kaden's Mom's Story...

Early in my pregnancy with Kaden, my doctor and I discovered that he had already wedged himself head-down in my pelvis. The specialist said that he wasn’t going anywhere, and to just expect to be uncomfortable!  I was, and it was a very hot summer, but he was worth it...he was born two weeks early weighing 8 lbs., 2 oz. on Sept. 28th, 2006 and was perfect- almost!

Kaden was turned to the left, head-down in-utero, so the left side of his head was pressed against my pelvic bone. When he was born, we noticed that his left ear was completely flat, as was the left side of his head. His ear plumped up nicely, but his head stayed that way. At his 8 week appointment, our pediatrician noted that his neck was possibly a little tighter on the right side and that his head was still not round even after lots of positioning attempts and had us get a PT evaluation.  The PT confirmed that he was indeed a little bit tighter, but was mostly concerned about the head shape. He was a friend of mine and told me about banding. He was almost three months old at this point. We made an appointment to see another specialist. She took some head measurements and rated the shape of his head- yep --- Plagiocephaly!  Our pediatrician’s initial diagnosis was confirmed, and she recommended getting band treatment.  She said that his head would not shape up on its own.

That was January 15th, 2007. We were scared and I was tearful, but we had known that we were most likely going to need this, so we were okay. It took some time and patience messing with insurance, but Kaden got his STARband one day before he turned 5 months, on February 27th, 2007.  Our insurance was going to cover it 100%!

Kaden did great in his STARband from day one. He didn’t really fuss at all in it, and the only complaint we had was that it was hard to cuddle him! He has been in it 6 weeks, and we just had a scan done with the STARscanner, and he no longer has “plagiocephaly”!  His head is as symmetrical as anyone else’s.  He has grown SO much in the last few weeks; he will wear it for another 4 weeks or so to perfect the front of his head. His forehead is still not quite the same on both sides.

All in all, this has been VERY worth it.  Now he can go bald as an adult (which I am sure he will!) and won’t have to worry about a crooked head.
