Dean's Story..
We first learned that Dean may be experiencing Plagiocephaly on his routine 2 month visit to our Pediatrician. Such a big word fancy word, it definitely had us, first-time parents, concerned. We were told it’s just a fancy name for “flat head” but none the less wanted to research and find out all we could to find out what treatment was available. Through our insurance and under our Pediatricians guidance, we were sent to University of Maryland Medical Center to meet with a physician from the Pediatric Oral-Maxillofacial Surgery Center (Dr. John Caccamese) he confirmed it looked like Dean was developing plagiocephaly and recommended some simple at home physical therapy techniques and increased “tummy time” to see if his head would round out on it’s own, it did not. Dr. Caccamese recommended the STARband and STAR Cranial Center on our follow up visit, and on December 7th, Dean became the first patient at the new center in Columbia, MD.
The STARscanner equipment that was used to measure Dean’s head shape, and ultimately used to create his STARband is a fantastic piece of equipment, it was a piece of cake to lay Dean in the scanner, and get a picture perfect 3D measurement and image of his head. Laura and Jessica, the therapists at the Center, were so wonderful with Dean and very informative and supportive of new parents in an unfamiliar situation. Dean took to the scanner like a fish to water, and the process was over in less then 15 seconds. Two weeks later, Dean had his custom fitted (and beautifully decorated) STARband. It quickly became an extension of his head, and we grew as accustomed to seeing him in it, as he grew to wearing it, and it happened very quickly, a matter of days.
We couldn’t be more pleased with the results of Dean’s treatment and the professional manner in which he and we were treated at all of our sessions. We would absolutely recommend the STARband treatment to any parent and child that is in the same situation.
